Weekend Fun!
What a great weekend to be in the woods! Although we didn’t a have a huge agenda, we definitely had plans for fun! Top priorities? Enjoying our time in the woods, checking and repositioning trail cams and exploring new areas in the woods. Checking trail cameras and repositioning them is one of my favorite things! It is a view into a world most do not get to see; in the spring baby animals start to make an appearance and there is something refreshing about watching a fawn grow. The Huntsman and I have been fortunate in that we have seen a couple sets of fawns make an appearance on our cameras. I love to watch them grow and thrive throughout the summer and fall.
Throughout the day as we accomplished each objective, we found some interesting creatures and prospects for more projects! As we explored, we came across a box turtle, this little guy was on his way somewhere, but took a minute to let us get a couple good pictures of him! After our photo op – we left him to get to where he was going. The Huntsman fired up our ATV and we headed to our next destination to check our next set of cameras.
As we rounded a corner, we both noticed the foliage on our left – wild raspberries! Beautiful raspberries and blackberries were sprinkled along our path. It is a bit early to pick these berries, however, they will be ready to pick in a couple of weeks and this gave us a great idea- jam! What better way to utilize the wonderful, vibrant and sweet fruit! When the fruit is ripened, there will be a morning of picking followed by an afternoon of making jam! There truly is nothing like homemade jam to top some homemade honey white bread. During our discussion and planning for our tasty treats, we heard a noise in the brush – an armadillo!
Armadillos are new to me, I have never had encounters with them, (being from the north) until I moved south. This particular armadillo was unaware we were there. We stood very still and since armadillos have bad vision, we were able to get very close to him. Of course with an armadillo, once startled they run like mad, but I was able to get within 5 feet of him before he realized he was not alone! Once he did discover us- he was out of there! The armored animal disappeared back into the brush within seconds. Back on our four wheeler we went to head back to our camp, make some dinner and relax from a fun filled day in the outdoors.
